Poll: Are Gas Prices Affecting Your Spending Habits?

Tuesday March 4, 2008
If you regularly have to fill up your car with gasoline, you're probably aware of the price of gas. Gas prices have continued to rise over the past couple months, and the average cost per gallon is up a little over 50 cents compared to one year ago. While the cost of gas has an immediate impact when you fill your tank, the effects can also begin to be felt in other areas. Since the cost of gas plays an important part in many people's lives, I thought it would be interesting to see how it is currently affecting people.

If you want, feel free to leave a comment here, or join the current discussion on the message board. And if you're looking for ways to try and save money on gas, here are 5 ways to save on gas.

Unlike last year, I’m having to budget gas money like I do most bills. I’ve averaged the gallons of gas I use per month, times that by $3 (will be higher soon) and divide by 2 (paid twice a month). That’s how much I allow for gas per paycheck. Anything over and that comes out of something else like the grocery budget. But I am cutting back on the amount of driving I do - I don’t go out to lunch anymore (I take lunch in or order for delivery) and I don’t take spontaneous trips into town anymore. Everything is beginning to be planned out. We just stay home more - something the kids will have to get use to…

Discretionary driving is OUT. Consolidate errands and appointments and am looking for a smaller, diesel, vehicle.

Here in the Uk petrol prices have gone up dramatically over the past year and the price of a litre is now well over £1 and rising. I must admit i haven’t noticed a reduction in the amount it is effecting the traffic, i guess people are just saving money else where to pay the increased prices.
I just wish the industry would develop new engines that disn’t require fuel of this type , not even bio fuels as this is causing the increase in food prices.
