Controversial IRS-Proposed Privacy Regulations May Invite Identity Theft

From , former About.com Guide

Why It Works

The IRS wants to make sure that tax preparers can't hide information about consumers' privacy rights in the small print. As with many poorly written regulations, the intention of the new rules is good, but the highly possible unintended consequences are a threat to consumers, because the wording leaves the door wide open for identity thieves.

Why It Doesn't Work

A spokesman for the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) said that the regulations would allow powerful special interests to "plunder our confidential tax records for commercial gain."

Where it Stands

Until the companies who handle our personal tax return information figure out how to safeguard that information, these proposed regulations should not be implemented.

If you're concerned about your privacy, let your representatives in Congress know how you feel about the proposed changes.
